Marketing ideas for the high school senior photographer

[ 0 ] March 30, 2010 | Nancy Nardi

There’s not just one magic bullet idea or strategy that will work for promoting high school seniors. It is the combination of a lot of things that work together to create a successful campaign. Here are a few ideas

Have a Model program. Many studios use a model campaign to get seniors in the door. They photograph models in the winter or spring, then give those models rep cards to share with friends. It’s a good way have images to use in your advertising and for generating referrals.

Set up a Facebook Page. This is where seniors are, and you are most likely already aware of that. Spend some time planning a facebook strategy. Focus on building relationships with seniors instead of selling to them.

Get a Display. Having a display in a mall or another local business is a great way to create awareness about senior portraits and your studio. Have an easy way for them to contact you and a nice promotional piece for them to take.

Update your website. Your website is often the first point of contact with a potential senior. It should wow them. Have a dedicated site for seniors. Keep it updated at least monthly. Change the images frequently. Have a way to capture customer information at your site, like an email sign up.

Direct Mail – If you have a targeted list and well designed piece,  direct mail is still one of the most effective ways to reach high school seniors.

Have a referral program in place. Have a system in place to encourage referrals and word of mouth.

Offer a 2 for 1 special. This is better than just a flat discount, and a way to get their friends in the door and create an experience.

  • There are other factors that effect the success of your senior marketing like:
  • The price of your products and services. too low, and you’ll look desperate. Perceived value – are you too high for what you offer?
  • Image quality, no matter how nice your marketing is, it still can’t help mediocre images that anyone with a camera can create.
  • Design quality, if your piece looks like everyone else, or looks dated and poorly designed it will hurt your business.
  • Is the experience you offer worth talking about. Do your clients tell others about their experience?

Tomorrow: One of the best resources anywhere that will take your senior portrait business to the next level.
